Recruitment specialists working in the aviation industry receive hundreds of CVs every week and spend less than 20 seconds scanning a CV before making the decision whether the applicant is suitable for the open job position. So how to impress them to get invited to the interview and land your dream job?
1. Carefully read the job advert
Sounds like a simple and obvious thing. Nevertheless, employers get a lot of CVs from people who do not meet the requirements of the job position offered. Study the job advert very carefully before you apply. Make sure that you have all the qualification needed.
2. Tailor your CV to the position
Highlight specific skills mentioned in the job description. Useful tip – carry out a little research about the company which you are applying for and use some keywords in your CV that would match the one the company is looking for (for example, dynamic, motivated, enthusiastic, result-oriented, etc.).
This may sound like a lot of work but it is well worth doing. Unfortunately, having a one-size-fits-all CV for everything will not get you noticed.
3. Tell the truth
Filling the CV with facts that are false is never a good idea. There is a great saying: ‘lies have short legs’. It will not take much time for employers to find out about the lies in your CV, especially keeping in mind that many employers conduct background checks. Furthermore, you can accidentally reveal your lies during the interview. This would negatively affect your future employability.
4. Keep to the point
A CV is the summary of your work experience, skills as well as qualities you have, and the values you can bring to the company. Stick to the facts and the benefits they have delivered. It is really worth highlighting relevant projects you have managed, and specifying targets you have achieved. Also, include all the promotions, even the minor ones. Demonstrate relevant experience you have in the particular sector the company operates.
5. Choose a type of CV wisely
Depending on a particular case and your main strengths opt for a chronological or a skill-based curriculum vitae. The chronological one focuses on the chronology of your experience starting with the newest information. Meanwhile, the one based on skills highlights the skills you have developed up to the moment of writing your CV.
6. Keep it to a maximum of two pages
Include a brief introduction to your CV summarizing your skills and qualities, then move straight to your most recent job position. Avoid long paragraphs and rambling sentences. A bullet-pointed list would be a proper format to highlight the responsibilities and experience. In addition to that, give some brief examples where relevant.
7. Keep it professional
You need to give the best impression and convince the recruiters that you are the person they are looking for. Add a professional touch to your CV. You can mention your hobbies but make it work for you and choose just the ones that are suitable for the job position you are applying for. If a company is looking for a person with team working skills, mentioning your love for team sports can add extra points.
8. Format your CV
The best impression of your CV is when it is clear and neat. Make it easy-to-read, keep some white space around the text to make it easier to find information. Do not try to fit too much text on one page, so avoid using text in size 8 font. Have your CV, references and any additional information requested, on hand.
9. Proofread your CV and cover letter
The key point of a professional CV is making sure it is mistake-free, so it is a good idea not to leave any spelling mistakes. If you are not sure, ask someone to read it. Check one more time, if the contact person’s name and the job role you are applying for are written correctly. There is nothing more annoying than a person who claims to have good attention to detail but leaves a number of mistakes. Do not rely on spell check systems on your computer or online.
10. Send it in the right format
Don’t try to guess what kind of format the employer would prefer to receive. Read the advert again and be sure to send it in the right format. If sending directly to an employer via their e-mail, it’s worth sending your CV as an easy-to-read text within the body of the e-mail itself. Then also attach a version with the full layout you’ve designed and attractive fonts that you have chosen. Notably, do not use your current or previous work e-mail and if needed, create a new e-mail address.
